“Relax, Anth. She's right here and is fine. Easy, man.”
Anthony had dipped in and out of top space, and now he was panicking about the after care of Sydney. I could see guilt and worry building in his glassy eyes. Despite trying to calm him, he continued to make panicked movements. He scampered out of the blanket to stand up, taking Sydney with him. He stood with her cradled in his arms, looking around the room. He set Sydney down in the center of the bed and stood upright and brought his hand up to his chest.
“Sydney, hang on a sec, sunshine…” His eyes raced around the room unsure of what he was really looking for. “I'm just going to get…” He wiped his eyes with his forearm and dropped his hand to his lower abdomen.
Enough. I couldn't watch Anthony fall apart, and I wasn't going to let him fall apart. I took hold of his upper arm and walked towards the bed with him and nudged him to lie next to Sydney. I had hoped he wouldn't freak out and think I was dominating him. I wasn't, I just knew what he needed right then.
Sydney took hold of his hand, and a smile appeared on her dazed face. I handed Anthony a bottle of water and stood next to them on the bed while he held it up for Sydney to sip. He tried to hand me back the bottle when Sydney was done, but I pushed it back in his hand. I silently urged him to drink the water and was satisfied when he did. He fed Sydney some M&M's and tossed a few in his mouth.
Eventually, Sydney rolled to her side, and Anthony spooned with her and shared her pillow. Seeing the two of them tugged at my heart. I was a part of something unusual and rare with them. I glanced at my watch and saw it was well after midnight. Sydney and Anthony had their eyes shut, and Anthony held her protectively in his arms.
I pulled my shirt off, kicked my shoes off and lay down in front of Sydney. There was a little room on the pillow, and I let my head rest there. Sydney's hair was a mess in that cute “I've just been fucked” sort of way. I softly stroked her flushed cheek and brushed a lock of her hair behind her ear.
I pulled a blanket over them and stretched my arm across Sydney, and my hand rested on her back over the blanket. They were both still and quiet. I was pretty sure that they were asleep.
“I love you guys,” I whispered and lay quietly with them while they relaxed.
I shut my eyes and let them rest for a while and opened my eyes when I felt Anthony begin moving around. I propped myself up on an elbow and looked over at him. He was looking over Sydney's back and had a troubled look on his face.
“Hey, happy birthday, Anth.
